The ruins of Auberdine, as seen from the former hill.

The town of Auberdine used to lie along the western coast of Kalimdor in the region of Darkshore. Being the closest port to Darnassus in the continent of Kalimdor, it provided the connection between Teldrassil and the continent by sea and air. After the cataclysmic Shattering, Auberdine was left in ruins, ravaged by the sea and the enraged elements of air. Many of its inhabitants perished, some moved on to the refuge of Lor'danel.

History

The exact date of settlement of the town of Auberdine is unknown. However, it was the only populated residential settlement in Darkshore at the time (other than the Grove of the Ancients which arguably does not count). Auberdine was ravaged much later than the other settlements in the area, Ameth'Aran and Bashal'Aran, suggesting that the town was founded post-sundering.

Story of the Twin Dryads

One legend passed down by the common folks in Auberdine tells the story of two dryad sisters - Aessina and Ressina, who were sent by Cenarius to help the survivors of Ameth'Aran and Bashal'Aran. While Ressina swiftly secured the southern ruins and led its former residence to where now the village would stand, she was ambushed by a large platoon of demons. By the time her sister arrived, the dryad had sacrificed her life to slay the demonic general. It is said her body was taken to Ashenvale and buried, becoming today's Shrine of Aessina. Ressina, however, stayed behind in Darkshore. After her death, her body turned into a tree now solemnly watching the tides by the pier.

Leadership

For full article, see: The Auberdine Council

Auberdine was governed by the druid Thundris Windweaver who had a (somewhat) democratically appointed council under him by any resident that meets the criteria. Thundris' legacy in from of his council is composed of the Sentinel captain, Bornas Stormcrow and Lafianna, all refugees of the former town.

The council's job was primarily administrative, lacking a native Auberdinian fighting force or port authority. Those were left at the hands of those willing to take it. However, depending on the membership, the spheres of power of Auberdine could frequently overlap.

Culture

Auberdine was proud to have retained a semi traditional and simple way of life even after it had joined the Alliance. Not having plenty of desirable resources or specific places to visit, other than being another stop along the way for Darnassus-bound marine trade. This has maintained the nocturnal operations of the town.

The culture of Auberdine was mostly very superstitious and were known not to forgive mythical villains easily.
