Moonglass is a common kaldorei building material.
Composure
Moonglass is made from the same basic materials as normal glass is made from: sand and common minerals like lime.
The process it generally the same, albeit much more slow and precise, due to the fact night elves lack means of mass production like specialised furnaces. What differs is the shaping procedure: before being formed, the mass is slightly cooled down by sprinkling minimal amounts of moonwell water. Afterwards, the craftsman continues to shape the object into a desired form.
Properties
Like common glass, moonglass is not too sturdy, yet functions as a good isolator. Due to its transparency, it's also used for making bottles and vials.
What makes moonglass unique is its ability to gently shimmer and give off bright blue light during nighttime. While still providing minimal illumination, this serves as a minor religious aspect of the society: night elves believe Elune to be with them when moonglass shines. As a side effect, adventurers and outsiders also associate kaldorei settlements with eerie-glowing lights amongst the forest meadows.
Use
Moonglass is used as material for various vials and containers of liquids, such as a moonheater.
Its main purpose is to serve as isolation for windows in night elven homes.
Due to night elven beliefs, moonglass is also used for making lamps. These are then filled with a commonly-made herb extract and a little water. The reaction gives off bright, colorless light. When it passes through moonglass, it gains the blue tint shared by the material and enhances it natural glow.
Thus, lamps aligned by the road are a sign of Elune gracing the traveler with her presence, warding off evil and misfortune and allowing a good journey.
